Cumming first benefited from the gold industry as many businesses were created to meet the needs of the miners. After the California Gold Rush in 1849 the city experienced an economic depression.
Today the city has new growth, thanks to the completion of GA 400 that has helped turn Cumming into a commuter town for Metro Atlanta.
